The Wood Thrush is an exemplary singer who will duet with itself. In the final trilling phrase of its three-part song, they sing pairs of notes simultaneously, one in each branch of its y-shaped  voicebox. The two parts harmonize with each other to produce a haunting, ventriloquial sound. This reclusive bird's cinnamon brown serves as camouflage as it scrabbles for leaf-litter bugs deep in the forest, though they will jump upright often to look around, revealing a boldly spotted white breast. Though still numerous, their numbers are rapidly declining due to cowbird nest parasitism, habitat loss, and acid rain's depletion of its prey.
