Many birders adore the stunning beauty of wood ducks. Males are iridescent chestnut and green, with ornate patterns on almost every feather. The Wood Duck nests in various places: trees near water, sometimes directly over water, other times over a mile away. Wood ducks have strong claws on their webbed feet which help them grip onto tree bark. After hatching, the ducklings jump down from the nest tree and make their way to the water. The mother will call the ducklings to her, but will not help them find their way. The ducklings may jump from heights of over fifty feet without injury.
