“Too much joy, I swear, is lost in our desperation to keep it.”

― Ocean Vuong, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous

I created this painting in January 2024 while grappling with my own anxieties around growth and change. I wanted to push myself to paint more intuitively, and expressively during a workshop with Martin Campos. Martin always tells his students to “not gild the lily” - a metaphor to allow the art to breathe and take on its own life, without spelling it all out for the observer.

Artwork size: 9 x 12 in.

One of my favorite artist’s philosophies comes from the great Zen Master and artist, Hakuin Ekaku. He proposed that the inner character of the artist shining through gives a painting its power. With that in mind, my figurative paintings explore and encompass all of my interests in art: the exploration of mixed media, the design of shapes and forms by observing the figure, the joy of color and line, and Zen meditation.
