Only male red-winged blackbirds have the characteristic red and yellow shoulder patch. Interestingly enough, red-winged blackbirds are known for their polygynous social system. Up to fifteen females have been observed nesting on the territory of a single male, making this one of the most highly polygynous of all bird species. I love the male Red-winged Blackbird’s conk-la-ree! song, which reminds me of growing up in Chicago and seeing them all around.
