The gray crowned crane can only be found in the grassy flatlands, wetlands and savannahs of East Africa. These birds look particularly fabulous with blue-gray feathers, a black-and-white face, and a crown of golden-yellow plumes. During the breeding season, crowned cranes will partake in graceful and elaborate mating dances, and will pair together for life. In an effort to protect their nest, the crowned crane will sometimes feign injury to lure predators away. Groups can be distinguished from a distance by listening for their low, wistful “maaah-hem” bugling.
