Emily (in Wonder of the Gothic) Original

Emilymetalskin is an artist, art model, and purveyor of all things curious and creative. I love collaborating and drawing Emily because she’s not afraid of being herself or exploring a new, interesting persona for fun. Oftentimes, Emily will create her own costumes and props for drawing sessions to encourage us to bring our full creative selves to the table.

In this session, Emily had picked out the color turquoise as the focus. Emily always enjoys the playfulness of working with handmade props. The skull plant she created almost acts as a memento mori (a Latin phrase meaning 'remember you must die') against her wistful gaze towards the viewer.

Artwork size: 9 x 12 in.

One of my favorite artist’s philosophies comes from the great Zen Master and artist, Hakuin Ekaku. He proposed that the inner character of the artist shining through gives a painting its power. With that in mind, my figurative paintings explore and encompass all of my interests in art: the exploration of mixed media, the design of shapes and forms by observing the figure, the joy of color and line, and Zen meditation.
