The Brazilian Ruby is a relatively large hummingbird. The male is overall green with a coppery back and rump, a coppery-rufous tail and a highly iridescent ruby throat that can appear black from some angles. Females are green on their heads, tails, wings and backs, and cinnamon fronts. Both genders have a white post-ocular spot and a straight black bill. These hummingbirds are found in the understory of humid rainforest and visiting feeders at forest edges in eastern South America.
