Black-capped chickadees are both adorably iconic and resilient birds due to their unique ability to lower their body temperature at night and enter regulated hypothermia, saving significant amounts of energy and protecting them from the cold. They possess an exceptional spatial memory to relocate stored food. It is the state bird of Maine and Massachusetts.
