Male Scarlet Tanagers are a gorgeous bird that migrate from northern South America to eastern North America to breed in the summer. Their breeding plumage consists of a blood-red body, set off by jet-black wings and tail feathers. They’re also one of the most frustratingly difficult birds to locate because they perch high in forest canopies, singing rich songs. The yellowish-green, dark-winged females can be even harder to spot until you key in on this bird’s chick-burr call note. In autumn, males trade red feathers for yellow-green and the birds take off for their native home.
