Also known as the zebra woodpecker because of its distinctive black and white feathers, the red-bellied woodpecker can be found mostly in the woodlands of eastern North America. Red-bellied Woodpeckers are pale, medium-sized woodpeckers seen frequently in both forests and city parks alike. A Red-bellied Woodpecker can stick out its tongue nearly two inches past the end of its beak. The tip of its tongue is barbed and the bird’s spit is sticky, making it easier to snag bugs from deep tree crevices.
