One can find the common loon floating in freshwater lakes all across North America, ready to dive underwater to catch a fish at a moment’s notice. An agile swimmer, the loon propels itself underwater with its feet, but moves clumsily on land. The only time a loon goes ashore is to mate and incubate their eggs. Common Loons swim underwater to catch fish, launching themselves with their feet and swallowing most of their prey while underwater. Common loons are also the state bird of Minnesota.
