Everyone knows Rock Pigeons, or domestic pigeons, as city birds that subsist on handouts of discarded food and offerings of birdseed from the local bird lady. Introduced to North America from Europe in the early 1600s, city pigeons nest on buildings, subway platforms, and window ledges. Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets and Egyptian hieroglyphics suggest that pigeons were domesticated more than 5,000 years ago. Pigeons have shared a long history with us, yet nobody knows where the species' original range was.
