“Hooded” is an understatement for this fantastically crested little duck. Hooded Mergansers locate their prey underwater with their keen sight. These ducks can actually change the refractive properties of their eyes to improve their underwater vision. They also possess an extra transparent eyelid, called a “nictitating membrane” which helps protect the eye during swimming, like a pair of goggles.
