The Cedar Waxwing has silky, shiny brown, gray, and lemon-yellow feathers, accented with a subdued crest, sporty black mask, and brilliant-red wax droplets on its wings. In autumn, these birds gather by the hundreds to eat berries, filling the air with their high, thin, whistles. Because they eat so much fruit, Cedar Waxwings occasionally become intoxicated when they run across overripe berries that have started to ferment and produce alcohol. Courting Cedar Waxwings will playfully pass food back and forth to each other. In Europe during the Middle Ages, the waxwin’s’ red wax droplets were seen as omens of hellfire, associated with the plague and spread of illness.
